The next chapters

Announced plans for 2027 and 2028

Future maps carry the 2026 clubs forward, apply known league moves, and add these announced projects from their planned launch year. These are projections, not confirmed final rosters. Each announcement explains its conditions; a stadium, approval or launch date can change.

The projection includes Athletic Club Boise's announced 2027 move to the Championship. Fort Lauderdale United appears once in League One from 2027; a continuing separate League Two team has not been assumed.

USL Premier is scheduled for 2028, but the map does not predict its inaugural members or promotion outcomes. Our guide to the U.S. soccer pyramid explains the levels. Read the expansion notes for dated plans, known moves, and projects left off the projection.

Which USL? The timeline begins in 2011 with USL Pro and the Premier Development League. It follows the professional league through its USL and Championship names, adds League One from 2019, and follows the PDL into League Two. Earlier USL predecessor competitions and the women's leagues are outside this edition. League Two is a seasonal development league; selecting all three does not imply they have the same professional status.

Played seasons and pauses. A club appears in seasons it participated in, including the three Puerto Rican USL Pro clubs removed during 2011. Clubs moving to another competition disappear from that USL view. The canceled 2020 League Two season has no assignments. Club names follow recorded eras; missing artwork uses neutral name labels. Some League Two crests are current artwork used for the same club name, rather than independently dated seasonal marks. Source notes identify these limitations.

What “closest” means. Each U.S. county or Canadian census division goes to the eligible club with the shortest great-circle distance from its geographic centroid to the club's approximate home municipality center. Clubs in the same municipality use one consistent anchor across leagues. These are city-level anchors, not driving distances or a reconstruction of every stadium change. Tied city anchors produce stripes using every tied club's color. Crests label territories rather than pinpoint stadiums; collision spacing can move them away from the territory center. Clubs with no closest regions in the displayed geography remain in the club list without a map crest.

One consistent geography. The same 3,142 U.S. Census 2017 counties and equivalents cover all 50 states and Washington, DC in every season. The map also includes Statistics Canada's 2021 census divisions within the displayed part of southern Canada. Canadian and other non-mainland USL participants are eligible; U.S. territories and countries beyond the U.S. and Canada are not shaded. Alaska and Hawaii are insets for display only, and distances use their actual locations.

Canada is a cropped view. Only part of southern Canada is shown. A division crossing the map's edge keeps its full geographic centroid for the distance calculation; the crop changes only the drawing. U.S. county counts and Canadian division counts stay separate, and Canadian totals cover only divisions included in this view. Colors show proximity, not fan allegiance or official club territories.
