How standings are ordered
Points come first: 3 for a win, 1 for a draw, 0 for a loss, or 2 for a win if your league still counts it that way. Teams level on points are separated by the tiebreakers, in the order you choose above. The default is goal difference, then goals scored, then head to head, then total wins, and teams still level after all of that are listed alphabetically.
Leagues differ, so check your own rulebook. At the time of writing the Premier League goes to goal difference, then goals scored, then head to head; La Liga goes to head to head first; MLS counts total wins before goal difference. Many youth leagues cap the goal difference credited from any one game, which this calculator does not do, and some tournaments add fair play points or a coin toss at the end.
Questions
- How are points calculated in soccer standings?
- Almost every league gives 3 points for a win, 1 for a draw and 0 for a loss. Some recreational and older leagues use 2 for a win and 1 for a draw; the calculator has a switch for that. Points decide the order first, and the tiebreakers only matter between teams level on points.
- What is goal difference, and why does it come before goals scored?
- Goal difference is goals scored minus goals conceded across the season. Most leagues use it as the first tiebreaker because it rewards defending as well as scoring; goals scored alone would favor a team that wins 5-4 over one that wins 1-0. Goals scored is usually the next tiebreaker after it.
- How does the head-to-head tiebreaker work?
- When two teams are level, the games between just those two decide it: points in those games first, then goal difference in them, then goals scored in them. With three or more teams level, leagues differ a lot in how they build the mini-table, so this calculator moves on to the next tiebreaker instead of guessing. Head to head needs the results themselves, so it is skipped when you type records rather than paste scores.
- Can I use this for a tournament group stage?
- Yes. Paste the group's results, four teams and six games in the usual format, and read the table. Check the tournament's own rules for the tiebreaker order, since group stages often go to head to head before goal difference, and some youth tournaments cap the goal difference counted from any one game.
