Soccer city rankings 2026

We ranked the 81 US metros where SoccerMapd has listings in at least 8 of its 12 place categories. Each metro is scored 0 to 100 on six dimensions, half by how many listings it holds and half by listings per 100,000 residents, and the composite is the average of the six. One caveat, and it matters: both halves measure what we have listed, which reflects our collection as much as it reflects the city.

Methodology

Data
The SoccerMapd directory as of September 8, 2026: 5,449 listings across the 81 ranked metros. Every listing was collected by hand, metro by metro, and assigned to one metro. Earlier metros were collected under a looser spec than later ones. Listings marked closed are not removed from the counts.
Dimensions
  • Places to play: soccer fields, pickup games, indoor facilities and futsal listings.
  • Adult leagues: adult leagues.
  • Youth programs: youth leagues, youth clubs and training providers.
  • Watching: places to watch and supporters clubs.
  • Shopping: soccer stores.
  • Pro soccer: US-league pro clubs within 40 miles of the metro's listing centroid, plus stadium listings.
Pro clubs are the clubs in MLS, NWSL, the USL Championship, USL League One and the USL Super League, counted when their home venue sits within 40 miles of the mean coordinate of the metro's listings.
Scoring
Each dimension is scored two ways across the ranked metros: by the raw listing count and by listings per 100,000 residents. Each is a percentile rank, so the top metro scores 100, the bottom scores 0 and ties share a score. The dimension score weighs the per-capita rank at 50% and the count rank at 50%, and the composite is the plain average of the six dimension scores. Per capita alone would rank metros by population in reverse, because we collected a similar number of listings in each; counting breadth as well rewards the metros where the directory runs deepest. The overall listings rank in the cards is by raw count, with no population adjustment.
Population
US Census Bureau, Vintage 2025 Population Estimates, Metropolitan and Micropolitan Statistical Areas Population Totals 2020-2025 (CBSA-EST2025-ALLDATA), released March 26, 2026, July 1, 2025 estimates. Where our metro spans two Census areas the figure is the sum, and the Miami and West Palm Beach rows use the metropolitan divisions of the Miami MSA rather than the whole of it.

Exclusions
A metro is ranked only when we hold listings in at least 8 of the 12 place categories. 23 metros fall short of that today, mostly because we have collected only their adult leagues so far; ranking them would call them soccer deserts when the truth is that we have not finished listing them.

The badge links back to the rankings page, where the figure can be checked. That figure counts the soccer listings SoccerMapd holds for the metro, per resident and in total, so it measures what we have listed rather than everything a city has. It is not a survey. The image updates as the table does, so if the metro moves the badge moves with it.
